Watanga FC took their CAF Champions League preliminary home match in the backyard of their opponents, MC Algers of Algeria.
The decision didn’t go down well with sympathizers of the club in Liberia.
Following the outcry and mockery, Watanga listed two reasons to back the move.
1. That the club had planned pre-season friendlies in North Africa, as such, they didn’t want to travel to the north twice which would have been expensive for the club to handle.
2. That the friendlies and two CAF Champions League matches against MC Algers would have been used to expose their players to scouts who they said would have come from Europe and other North African countries.
The Liberian Champions played only two games, the CAF Champions League preliminary Qualifiers, which they lost 2-0 each to the hosts.
The stadium was filled to capacity for the first game , which was a home match for Watanga, but MC Algers officials played the return leg behind close door.
The club has since returned to Liberia and up to date, there isn’t any information as to what happened to their planned activities.
Their departure was highlighted, but they returned in secret.
